THE OTTAWA ANIMATION FESTIVAL SIGNAL FILM & POSTER
Amanda Bonaiuto and I were approached to make the signal film and poster design for the 2021 Ottawa International Animation Festival.
Ottawa was the first festival to have ever screened my work, so I was incredibly excited to take on this project. We had complete freedom to design the poster, which led us to explore the synergy of our style, the animated versions of ourselves and our joy and love of animation.
The signal film was my own ode to animation. It explores abstraction and different techniques of animation as our animated avatars make the perilous journey of “Production” into the bliss of completion and the unknown.

THUMBNAILS
I always start off the storyboarding process with loose thumbnails, to have a ‘not so precious’ approach to finding the story and best visual compositions.
STYLEFRAMES
Since the film would be played countless times throughout the festival, I really wanted each scene to be visually rich and dynamic, highlighting the carefree friendship of the two characters, as they breeze through the perils of ANIMATION — IYKYK! I designed these styleframes as a way of planning out all the colors, textures and backgrounds that would be needed for the animation.

ANIMATION PROCESS
Here’s a few snippets of my process, from detailed animatic, rough and clean animation to final comp. I love a good plan.
